Along with their words is a picture of their dog. This section will continue to be updated as we sort through all the letters we've gotten in the last 30+ years.

"Bo" born 1998
"Hello, Shelly,
I'm sure you don't remember me, but I purchased a puppy from you almost 7 years ago, back in '98. I brought my mom with me to look at the puppies you had available at the time and one really stood out. Unfortunately, he happened to be priced too high for my budget. Luckily for me, I had just been married in July of that year and my mom agreed to pay the difference as a wedding gift (Thank God for moms!). We ended up taking that puppy home. There is more to the story, however. My new husband and I had discussed getting a puppy and he said I could get any breed of dog I wanted, except a German Shepherd. He was bitten by a shepherd as a child and had nothing good to say about the breed. I, on the other hand, have been raised around shepherds, so I know they are wonderful dogs. I defied my husband's wishes and came home with this new shepherd puppy. When my husband came home he instantly fell in love with that little ball of fluff and they have been best buddies ever since! I let my husband name him and he is now called "Bo." I can't even begin to tell you what a wonderful dog Bo has been and how much he means to us, but I'll give you an example. My husband joined the army, and his permanent duty station turned out to be in Alaska, so we drove to Alaska so we wouldn't have to fly Bo. We went through about 11 states and Canada so Bo has been just about everywhere. Our baby was born in October and he has been very good around her.
Bo is a prime example of what a German shepherd dog should be. Not only is her beautiful, but he's also very loyal, affectionate, protective, eager to please and very, very intelligent. Sometimes I feel as though his intelligence was wasted on just being our family member because he would have made an excellent search and rescue dog. He would have excelled at any job given to him, but he's done a very good job of just being our pet. Since my husband is gone a lot, I feel safer being home alone with Bo around, so I guess his job could be considered protector and companion. He definitely excels at that. He brings us joy every day and every day he does something goofy that makes us laugh. He likes to sit up like a groundhog while leaning back on my husband for support to have his belly scratched. It just looks ridiculous for such a big dog to do that, but it's really funny. If a dog can have a sense of humor, it's Bo.
When Bo passes on- Hopefully not for many, many years- I will once again return to Stonehill Kennels. I believe you run a responsible operation and breed dogs of very good quality. I had been to several other places before finding Stonehill and in some cases I was disgusted by the condition of the dogs and the conditions they were kept in. Stonehill was very clean and the dogs were healthy and well taken care of and that's as it should be. I was impressed, and I will definitely come back for my next puppy.

She has bonded with me and my daughter, Sue (who has been a nurse for 30 years and still is.) Talk about protecting me! I have never had this kind of protection in my entire life (I'm 80 years young) This is the most beautiful German Shepherd I have ever seen. Everyone who sees her can't get over her beauty. She is a gorgeous dog and loves people. She minds good- doesn't chew anything. She loves walking and loves to hear me sing to her (It's bad bad singing) We adore her and tell her that all the time. I want to thank you Shelly for giving me this wonderful gift, I can't see life without her. Thank you for giving me a better life with this beautiful dog, for making my life complete. My husband and I purchased a GSD from you in February 2005. I thought I would send you some pictures and give you an update. We named him Maxx. Since I work for an Animal Hospital, he receives top of the line care. He enjoys going to the vet, he just lays there for everything. Vaccines, bloodworm, he doesn't mind, doesn't even flinch. Maxx likes having his teeth brushed daily, baths, nails trimmed, and ears cleaned. Loves going in the car and for walks. He is excellent around kids and his temperament is great. We get compliments on him all the time. Maxx is doing so good and we couldn't have asked for a better GSD. We just wanted to say thank you for letting us take him home with us. My name is Anita Matney. My husband, Billy bought a puppy from the litter of Baron Blitz Von Stonehill and Stonehill's Vondra Von Vixen in July 2002. She loves to play ball, chase squirrels out of the yard and go for walks and rides in the car. She won't hardly let me go anywhere without her! She is very well behaved. She is also a huge fan of the snow! I can hardly keep her in the house in the winter. She is a beautiful dog. When we go for walks around the neighborhood people are always commenting on what a pretty dog she is. The enclosed picture does not do her justice. She has the prettiest face and nicest features! If you ask me, she is perfect! She is so soft and fuzzy; I just love to pet her. Aside from her appearance, she is such a loveable, nice tempered dog. She is very loyal and obedient. Kaiser has become a very loved member of the family. He's gone up North with us and on a couple camping trips so far. He's a really good camper and car rider. We're very happy about that too! He's really adapted well to our routine too. He's fitting right in. He's been great with kids and other adults and dogs, although Tony's parents' dog was a little afraid of him and took off running any time he got too close to her. It was quite comical! We had him neutered, microchipped and had his hip X-rays taken. All is well- he did fine with the surgery and the X-rays looked good. We also had a mini- CBC blood panel done and that was good too! I think I told you that I work at the Macomb County Animal Shelter? Well, yesterday, a lady and her daughter came in to buy licenses for their two shepherds- one only 9 weeks old. Guess where they bought their dogs--- Yep, from Stonehill Kennels! So I showed them Kaiser's picture and talked with them for a few. I hope you enjoy the pictures and I'll send more as time goes on.

He earned his CGC certification in August (at 7 months old!) and is currently in another obedience class and doing well. We get so many compliments on him- how GORGEOUS he is- in fact, our trainer always says how he is the perfect shepherd. She's referring someone to look at him, so we'll send them your way! Sometimes I look at him and tell him that he's so gorgeous, I can't stand it! We are very happy with our choice and are thankful we were referred to you! "Dear Shelly,
First off thank you again for opening your home for me on Sunday, Dec. 14th after the tragic accident of Ilse Veronika Von Stonehill. We named our new baby Sela Leigh Von Stonehill. What a doll! I took her to a class that lasts 6 weeks called “Positive Puppy Training.”
The teacher, Ann, has been doing this for 30 years. She came to my home for 2 hours when I had Ilse. I was too late for that class but as I was talking to her on the phone she decided to stop over. She would not let me pay her. The short time she was here she told me if Ilse had been in her class she would have won the blue ribbon. She is very smart-Quote. Well of course I took the class with Sela and guess what? She won the blue ribbon and gold cup! I was so excited- I cried like a baby. There were newfoundlands, labs, short haired pointers, mixed breeds and so on in the class. She excelled in all tasks. She is so fun! When I took my turn with Sela and did my work exercises (you cannot touch your dog at all during this time) Ann said to me 'What can I say? Perfect!'
I cannot wait until Spring so Sela can smell all the new flowers and grass. She loves to ride in our trucks and can jump up herself and get out with no help. You know I will contact you soon to make arrangements to get another puppy. She is so good with other odgs. We have some friends with a yellow labe that come over. Sela really gets a work out. Sela was the youngest in the class. I’m not bragging too much am i? Joke, joke. You really have beautiful little miracles coming out of your kennels. Thanks again Shelly and talk to you soon.

First I’d like to say I’m sorry that I have not sent pictures before this time. I had talked to you when Reagan was about five months old and said I would send you pictures shortly and I didn’t. I’ve just been very busy. I have enclosed some pictures of Reagan at different ages over the last year. Reagan turned 1 year old December 18, 2000. Reagan has been the best thing I have ever gotten. He is a very smart and very good looking dog. I get compliments on him all the time. The kids in the neighborhood all know him and like to pet him. He is a very well mannered dog. I even had two police officers stop by my house in the Summer time when they saw us playing in the yard and the complimented him on how good looking he is. They wanted to know where I had gotten him from, so I told them. Maybe they got a dog from you too. It’s been quite a journey the last year and a big learning experience for me but it has all been well worth it. He does the best in puppy class because I spend a lot of time at home with him practicing things with him and he learns things easily. Right now I’m looking into getting him into more advanced training. He is the greatest dog on the planet and my best buddy. I thank you all very, very much.

The cats are no longer an issue, they love her and she licks them and plays with them. She goes everywhere I go and loves every minute of it. She has more toys than most kids and knows what they all are by name. I got her a swimming pool and in between Frisbee she hops in the pool and stickers her head under water. She is indeed the friendliest GSD I’ve owned ever but definitely is protective of her people. She knows good from bad people and has only demonstrated bad vibes with 2 people and I must say I agreed with her. She has won her way into my fiance’s heart and this is a first. Well now that Im done bragging about her I just wanted to tell you thank you. Shes exactly what you said she’d be. My best friend!

"We just purchased our 2nd dog from Stonehill last week. After 12 fantastic years with our first one, we would not have gone anywhere else to find another dog! We trained our first dog to work for Search & Rescue in northeastern Michigan, and enjoyed every minute of not only training him, but working with him to find lost hunters, or elderly people. He loved to work! Losing him was one of the hardest things we ever went through in our lives! We now have filled that void and are ready to pursue training another guy to work and enjoy himself, and entertain us, lol!
You see, Shelly puts her heart and soul into raising and breeding these wonderful German Shepherds and has the talent of getting to know about a person before selecting the type of dog they need. She bonds from day one with each of her animals and they all know her as "Mom." Not only does she mate for good color, but temperament, and agility are important to her too. After 40 years of her own business, and 20 additional years working beside her dad at his kennels this woman knows dogs! She also has training classes, and can also train your dog for you, plus has "Socials" for the dogs to learn to mingle and get along with other dogs, while you drop off your pet and go have lunch while she is out there with 50 or more dogs playing and teaching them to enjoy each other! That is pure love of her animals folks, no other way to look at it. It is very rare to find her without a large beautiful smile on her face, and how she does that is beyond me after a hard days work in the kennels, whew! My thanks to Shelly not only for the animal we just brought home, but for all the dogs you have and are raising as they are lucky little rascals to have you for their "Mom." I only wish you had potty trained our new one, ugh! Forgot about that part, but sure remember now, lol!

Not knowing him I was trying to herd my children from hugging him and laying on the floor with him. However he proved to be a gentle loving giant who allowed three of my littles to hug him, stroke his nose, feet and lay down along side him. Our first introduction to Stonehill Kennels came through friends who currently live with and love two Stonehill dogs, after losing their first Stonehill dog who passed away. When we called, Shelly asked about our lifestyle and experience with GSDs, and after some discussion said she had the perfect puppy in mind. The pup she picked is a daughter of Kahnas and Ona, who are both certified Therapy Dogs. Emma is indeed perfect for us, and everything we could ever dream of in a GSD. Sweet, loving, loyal, and self-possessed, Emma has a well-balanced temperament, is not fearful to any degree but is curious and thoughtful, is physically very sound, is easily trained and willing to work, loves people and children, and is extremely intelligent. She is an absolute joy to be around.
We applaud the work the Powells have done at Stonehill Kennels - from the breeding program, to the comfortable and clean kennels, training yard, exercise yard, grooming facility, and spacious indoor training room. The Stonehill pups we have met (and the one we now love to live with) have obviously been well-socialized and well-loved before they meet their new families. The dedication of the Powells is also evidenced by their willingness to hold “Puppy Socials” (a 4-hour long supervised play session for dogs!) every 2 weeks. Our Emma has been to six of them in her 16 months, and she is always excited to go.

I really would love to find him a friend. If I am going to get another dog, it must be another shepherd. I wasn't sure if you had any litters coming soon, or if you were planning on having any near spring. We never had Michelob neutered, and it hasn't been an issue with his training or temperament. I think I want a female this time but I would definitely get her fixed. Your dogs are beautiful and their temperaments are gentle and obedient. I wouldn't look or inquire anywhere else."

Berlin is 11+ months old and today he weighed 85 pounds. I'm guessing him to be 23 inches. Again, a correctly proportioned male who can do any job asked of a GSD."

"We drove all the way from Wisconsin to get a Stonehill Kennel dog (Tacoma - now 2 years old), because we were looking for steady temperament and a lower "drive" than what's found in many shepherds these days. We have been delighted with this sweet, good natured, fun-loving dog! "Taco" is the perfect companion for us as we work around our farm. She welcomes strangers - usually with a frisbee in her mouth. She wants to please, and thus is trainable. She gets along with other dogs, so we can take her places. An added bonus: Taco has a lovely red and black coat color that gets compliments everywhere she goes, and her coat has a smooth, satiny feel that our previous 3 shepherds never had. It is lovely!"
